- Never leave your baby alone in the house.
- Never leave your baby alone on the table counter, bed, or anyplace where an infant can roll off and fall.
- Always keep the sides of the crib up when you are not tending to the baby.
- Install smoke detectors and fire extinguishers throughout your home.
- Install plastic caps on unused electrical outlets and make sure electrical wires are out of your baby’s reach.
- Always stay with your baby when he is in the tub. Only a split second is necessary for a baby to slip underwater.
- To prevent scalds, adjust your hot water hater so that the hot water from the tap is not hotter than 120-130 degrees Fahrenheit. PG & E will assist you with this if you are unable to do it alone.
- Check that the crib rails are no more than 2 and 3/8 inches apart.
- Do not use a pillow for an infant.
- Babies are not choosy about eating or sucking anything within reach: this is how they learn about size, shapes and textures. Make certain that walls, furniture, and toys are finished with lead-free paint.
- Baby-proof your home before your baby can crawl. Keep all hazardous and poisonous substances out of reach. The most dangerous rooms in the house are the kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom.
- Examine playthings carefully for tiny, sharp, detachable parts, such as buttons, beads, etc., which the baby might swallow or choke on.
- Never tie a pacifier or toy to a string or ribbon that is long enough to encircle your baby’s neck to avoid the possibility of strangulation. Avoid jewelry on children’s fingers or around their neck.
- Always use a safety-approved car restraint/ seat when you travel with your infant; a lap is never a safe place for a baby when traveling in a car.
